Read John 12:1-8
Key Verse: John 12:3 (ESV): Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
In middle school, my sister wanted to spend all her money on a bottle of perfume from the local mall. Birthdays, babysitting, and begging for the difference got her enough money to head to the department store and purchase the treasured triangular bottle from the glass case. It had a floral, woodsy scent, of lilies and freesia. For months she carefully positioned each pump on her clothes to not waste a drop, using it all on herself.
There’s a woman in the Bible who sacrificed such a treasure by pouring it all out on someone else. Her name was Mary.
More than 2000 years ago, a sweet smell filled the room as oil poured from a jar. The perfume cost nearly 300 days of labor! Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, wiped the expensive oil across Jesus’ feet with her hair in place of a towel. These feet that had traveled many miles—performing miracles, walking on water, and wandering in the wilderness—were before her once again.
At one time she sat at these feet listening as a student. Another time she knelt, sobbing in disbelief, mourning the loss of her brother, and questioning why… (listen below, or purchase the rest here as part of a 5 day devotional).
